Type of Work
A. Literary work
Select Literary Work if you are registering a nondramatic literary work. Literary Works include a wide variety of
works such as fiction, nonfiction, poetry, textbooks, reference works, directories, catalogs, advertising copy,
compilations of information, computer programs and databases*
Note: This category also includes an article published in a serial, but does not include an entire issue of a
periodical or other serial.
* This type of Literary Work must be registered using the Standard Application.
B. Work of the Visual Arts
Select Work of the Visual Arts if you are registering a pictorial, graphic, or sculptural work. Visual Arts works
include two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of fine, graphic, and applied art; photographs; prints and art
reproductions, maps, technical drawings; and architectural* works.
* This type of Visual Arts work must be registered using the Standard Application.
C. Sound recording
Select Sound Recording if your claim includes the recorded performance. (If you wish to register only music and/or
lyrics, select "Work of the Performing Arts," regardless of whether the format is printed or audio).
Important information about completing "Author created" screens: ..
If you are registering only the sound recording, on the "Author created" screen, check the box for "Sound
recording."
If you are registering both the sound recording and the recorded work (musical, dramatic, or literary), check the
box for "Sound recording" and the box for "Other." In the "Other" field, describe the author's contribution to the
underlying work, for example, "lyrics and music" (for a song) or "text" (for a recorded dramatic or literary work).

if all author(s) contributed to both works, or the copyright claimant owns all rights in both works through a

D. Work of the Performing Arts

E. Motion Picture/AV Work
Select Motion Picture/AV Work if you are registering a feature film, documentary film, animated film, television
show, video, videogame, or other audiovisual work. An audiovisual work is a work that consists of a series of
related images that are intended to be shown by the use of a machine or device, together with accompanying sounds,
if any.
F. Single Serial Issue
Select Single Serial Issue if you are registering an individual issue of a serial publication. A serial is a work
that is published in successive issues bearing numerical or chronological designations (such as "Volume 2, Issue
Number 3, Volume 2, Issue Number 4, etc."). The issues are published under the same continuing title and they are
intended to be continued indefinitely. Typically, the publisher has obtained a unique International Standard Serial
Number (such as "ISSN 1234-5678"), which is used to identify the serial title.
Examples of works that qualify as serials include periodicals, newspapers, magazines, bulletins, newsletters,
annuals, journals, proceedings of societies, and other similar works.
Examples of works that do not qualify as serials include episodes of a television series, a series of online videos,
a collection of musical works, a group of manuscripts, an assortment of poetry, a set of advertising copies, a
number of articles that were published within a larger work, or similar types of works.
Note: This option can only be used to register serial issues that have been published. If the serial issue has not
been published, select Literary Work as the type of work.
This option may be used to register the component works that appear within a serial publication (e.g., the
individual articles that appear within a magazine), but only if the copyright in the serial and the component works
are owned by the same party. If the serial and the individual contributions are owned by different parties, a
separate application and a separate filing fee will be required for each contribution.
